Validity of passports

Ans : Generally, no police verification is required in case of minor children up to the age of 18 years (validity of passport limited to 5 years) whose either or both parents hold a valid passport and the name of either parent is mentioned in his/her spouse′s passport along with the consent of both parents is available in the form of Annexure-D. Children between 15-18 years have an option to apply for 10 years validity passport on pre-police verification basis. However, final decision on police verification mode rests with Passport Office.

In case of minor's passport, whose father is abroad, is it mandatory to obtain father's consent to apply for the child's passport? If so, what is the procedure?

Ans: Ideally, both the parents/legal guardian should sign Annexure ‘D’ in fresh or re-issue cases (to safeguard the interest of minor applicants). Both parents shall be present at the PSK/POPSK while applying for passport for their minor children or one parent with passports of both the parents may be present (PSK in-charge may call for other parent, if not satisfied with the signature on Annexure-D). In case either parent is resident abroad, the parent who is submitting the application in India will sign the application form and obtain the consent of other parent in Annexure-‘D’. In the cases where consent of either parent is not possible to be obtained, declaration in form of Annexure-C may be provided with applicable reason. .

What is the mode for dispatch of passport?

Ans: The passport is dispatched by India Post through Speed Post to the present address of the applicant as filled in the passport application form.

My passport booklet is damaged. I want to go abroad on urgent basis. What should I do?

Ans : In case your passport has not been damaged beyond recognition, i.e. passport number is legible, name is legible and photo is intact, then you can apply for re-issue of passport under the Tatkaal scheme. However, the final authority for the issuance of passport under the Tatkaal scheme lies with the passport office. But, if passport has been damaged beyond recognition, then you cannot apply under the Tatkaal scheme.

I am a Retired Government official. Can I be issued a passport without Police Verification?

Ans: You cannot obtain a passport without police verification. But, if you apply under the Tatkaal scheme with required documents, passport can be issued on Post police verification basis (i.e. police verification would be done after the issuance of passport).

Can I reschedule the date of appointment once the payment is done through online?

Ans: Once an appointment at Passport Seva Kendra is confirmed, it can be rescheduled only two times within a year of the first appointment date. For Tatkaal appointments with effective from 01st April, 2023 only one reschedule of appointment will be allowed within a year of the first appointment date. For Police Clearance Certificate (PCC), only single appointment will be allowed within a year of the first appointment date.

What is the fastest way to replace a lost passport?

Ans : If you have lost your passport, you can apply for duplicate passport. There can be two application mode for duplicate passport application based on the scenario that validity of passport is still left or is expired.

If validity of passport is still left - Duplicate passport can be applied under normal category only. It takes approx. 30 days time in getting passport under normal category.

If validity of passport expired - Duplicate passport can be applied under tatkal as well as normal category , depending on the need or urgency. It takes approx. 3 days time in getting passport under tatkal category. In normal category , it will take 30 days time.

I applied for passport 2 years back but passport could not be issued due to issue in the police verification. Now I want to re- apply for passport. What would be the procedure?

Ans : Before re- applying for passport, you need to close previous passport application and will have to get NOC from concerned passport office.

Once NOC received you can re-apply for passport.

I want to change father's name of the child in his passport since I recently got remarried. What would be the documents required to do so ?

Ans : If an applicant whose biological parents have been divorced or one of the biological parents has expired and the biological mother/father (having the custody of the child) gets remarried, applies for passport and wants to get the same issued with the name of the stepfather/step mother instead of biological father/mother, as the case may be, following documents would be required :

A self-declaration on a plain paper stating that he/she does not want to have biological father/mother’s name on his/her passport and instead of that, the name of the step father/mother be mentioned against the column of father’s/mother’s name. The applicant also has to declare that in future if there is litigation, the entire onus to defend such a case will be on him/her.
At least two educational/public documents where the name of the step father/mother is mentioned against the father/mother’s name column.
Registered Marriage Certificate (of remarriage) of parent who is applying for minor.
Death certificate from the authority concerned in respect of the death of the biological father/ mother, if deceased.
