As per motor vehicle act, issue of driving license in Delhi is 2 stage process :


1. Learning License - You will have to apply for learning license first. You will have to take a computer based theory test . After clearing the test, you will get a learning license. Validity of the learning license is 6 months .. One can apply for permanent license after 1 month form the date of issue of driving license.


2. Permanent License -   To get permanent license, you will have to undergo through vehicle driving test where you will have to show your driving capability. The applicant should apply after one (01) months and within six (06) months from the date of issuance of his learner’s licence and should be conversant about the vehicle systems, driving, traffic rules & regulations.

Driving licence can be renewed  when the validity of it expires . A Driving Licence can be renewed one month before the expiry of it .


There is grace period of 1 month after the expiry of driving licence . During grace period there is no fine. After grace period there is late fine of Rs. 1000 per month for the renewal of the driving licence.

Validity of driving licence


Private Driving license is valid for 20 years from the date of issue or till the holder attains 40 years of age, which comes earlier.

After the age of 40 the Driving licence will be issued for 10 years & then 5 years subsequently.

Validity for Non Transport Vehicles

  • If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is less than 30 years, then the Non Transport Validity would be till the attainment of 40 years


  • If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >= 30 and <50, then the Non Transport Validity would be for a period of 10 years


  • If the age of the applicant on the date of issue or renewal is >=50 and <55, then the Non Transport validity would be effective until the date on which such person attains the age of 60 years

What is the validity of driving licence ?
